Ocean Sustainability And Climate Action Discussed At WGS 2025 Forum Led By UAE Ministry Of Climate Change
The Climate Action Forum recently highlighted the importance of ocean ecosystems in climate adaptation and mitigation. This event, part of the World Governments Summit 2025, was organised by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. The forum's theme, "Oceans Sustainability," emphasised oceans' crucial role in environmental sustainability and their potential to drive solutions for a cleaner future.
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, opened the forum with a compelling speech. She stressed the need for collaborative climate action to protect oceans. "The UAE recognises that it is in our common interests to act, but more importantly, we believe that we have a common duty to act," she stated. Her address underscored the UAE's commitment to nature-driven solutions like expanding mangrove cover and designating marine protected areas.

Al Dahak described oceans as humanity’s "vital allies" and highlighted their connection to global climate stability. She urged international cooperation to tackle rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and pollution. Following her speech, Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Vice President of the Maldives, shared insights on ocean sustainability and climate resilience. He called for stronger international cooperation on climate action, especially for small island states facing immediate threats.
The forum attracted high-ranking officials and experts from around the world. Among them was HE Dr. Anxious Jongwe Masuka from Zimbabwe, who received the Best Minister Award at the summit. The event featured four panel discussions exploring various aspects of ocean ecosystems and their impact on climate discourse.
The first panel discussion titled ‘Innovating for Blue Tomorrow’ focused on nature-based innovations discussed at the UN Ocean Conference 2025. It explored interventions and financing mechanisms for equitable transitions in coastal countries. The session aimed to advance multilateral opportunities and science-based decision-making across dialogues.
The subsequent session on ‘Zero Waste Ocean’ addressed global challenges in reducing ocean waste. Speakers highlighted efforts towards integrated waste management approaches aligned with sustainable development goals. They proposed innovative solutions to decrease ocean waste and promote access to cleanup technologies worldwide.
AI Innovations in Ocean Research
The third session delved into ‘Deep Learning for Deep Seas: AI Innovations in Ocean Research’. It showcased advancements in AI-enabled technologies for studying oceans. New underwater vehicles like autonomous underwater vehicles are transforming ocean conservation efforts. The session also covered advanced sensors for monitoring conditions, genetic analysis techniques for marine life, and sophisticated data analysis tools aiding scientists in understanding complex ecosystems.
The final session focused on ‘Ocean Sustainability and Climate Change’. It addressed global challenges in mitigating climate change impacts on oceans and marine life. Speakers discussed how the MENA region could enhance sustainable practices to combat climate change through innovative financing and effective governance strategies.
This forum underscored the urgent need for international collaboration to protect our oceans while exploring innovative solutions for sustainable development.
