NYU Abu Dhabi Celebrates Innovation At UAE Electric Vehicle Grand Prix
New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has recently celebrated the achievements of high school students in the second edition of the UAE Electric Vehicle Grand Prix (UAE EVGP). This innovative competition saw teams from Shenandoah Valley Virginia, Al Ittihad Private School, and Harrisonburg High School emerge victorious, judged on the number of laps completed. The event, which took place at Al Forsan International Sports Resort in Abu Dhabi, attracted over 450 students from various high schools.
The team from Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, participating as an independent group, clinched first place by completing 32 laps on a single battery charge. Following closely was Al Ittihad Private School, securing second place overall and the top position among UAE schools with 30 laps. The competition highlighted the prowess of UAE schools in multiple categories, with local teams winning awards in 12 out of 13 categories, including best performing new team, car workmanship, and technical innovation.

The UAE EVGP 2024 was a collaborative effort between Global EEE and 3elm Education and Training, supported by the US Mission in the UAE, NYU Abu Dhabi, ProjoTech, Al Forsan International Sports Resort, and PepsiCo. A distinguished panel of judges from the private sector, academia, and government sectors evaluated the participants. This panel included representatives from the US Department of Transportation and the Washington DC Department of Energy and Environment.
Mariët Westermann, Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, expressed her enthusiasm for the project: "We congratulate the Electric Vehicle Grand Prix winners and commend all the participating teams. It is inspiring to see high school students combine academic learning with hands-on exploration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts in an exciting real-world context. We are proud to serve as the academic partner. We will continue working at NYU Abu Dhabi to prepare and empower the next generation to explore advanced technologies and drive positive change toward a sustainable future."
This event not only showcased the innovative capabilities of young minds but also emphasized the importance of integrating academic learning with practical applications. Through competitions like the UAE EVGP, students are encouraged to engage with science and technology in ways that inspire creativity and foster a deeper understanding of sustainable practices.
