NWC Secures Top Prize In Environmental Sustainability Standards At 2025 King Khalid Award
National Water Company has received first place in environmental sustainability standards for 2025 from King Khalid Foundation. The award recognises the company’s national role in protecting resources and reducing environmental impact across Saudi Arabia. National Water Company states that the recognition reflects long-term planning, clear targets, and monitored performance indicators.
National Water Company CEO Dr. Fuad bin Ahmed Al AlSheikh Mubarak accepted the prize at King Khalid Foundation headquarters in Riyadh. Dr. Fuad thanked Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz for sponsoring the award ceremony. Dr. Fuad also appreciated the work of the award and judgment committees in selecting National Water Company.

The award committee assessed several environmental sustainability standards before ranking National Water Company first. Criteria covered climate, materials and waste, energy, water, and nature. Each standard included specific numerical targets, project plans, and follow-up mechanisms designed to align company operations with the Kingdom’s long-term environmental and climate objectives.
The climate standard focused on a net zero emission strategy that matches Saudi Arabia’s 2060 climate goals. National Water Company has prepared plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions from operations. The company is working to align projects, technologies, and internal procedures with those national commitments over the coming decades.
| Standard | Key focus for National Water Company |
|---|---|
| Climate | Net zero emissions strategy in line with the Kingdom’s 2060 goals |
| Materials and Waste | Sludge management targets and reuse of gases for bioenergy |
| Energy | Energy reduction, alternative generation, and solar projects |
| Water | Water loss management, reuse of treated water, and quality checks |
| Nature | Afforestation, NWC oases, and agreements with national entities |
Within the materials and waste standard, National Water Company adopted sludge management targets across its plants. The company uses gases produced from sludge to generate bioenergy at the Ajyal and Hit facilities. These projects aim to cut waste, reduce emissions, and supply energy back into operations.
The energy standard examined National Water Company programmes to reduce energy use and develop alternative supplies. The company has defined reduction targets for electricity consumption and is planning solar energy projects. These solar plans are intended to support treatment plants and networks, while easing pressure on the wider national grid.
The water standard measured performance in controlling water losses and reusing treated water. National Water Company set explicit, long-term targets for leakage reduction. The company also uses treated water for afforestation projects and conducts regular quality tests on both potable and treated water to protect public health.
The nature standard reviewed initiatives that support green spaces and biodiversity. National Water Company has launched afforestation drives and created National Water Company oases in several locations. The company signed agreements with national entities and royal preserves to expand these efforts and align them with wider conservation policies across the Kingdom.
Prince Faisal bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz, Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, chairs both the King Khalid Foundation Board of Trustees and the award committee. The 2025 first-place award for environmental sustainability standards reflects National Water Company’s current strategies and its declared commitment to meeting Saudi Arabia’s environmental goals.
