NWC And KARRDA Collaborate On Planting Three Million Saplings By 2030
The King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority (KARRDA) and the National Water Company (NWC) are collaborating on a significant environmental project. They plan to plant around three million wild saplings within the reserve's extensive 28,000 square kilometre area. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance environmental conservation and sustainability in Saudi Arabia.
Key locations within the reserve include Al-Khafs, Al-Tanhat, and Noura parks. These areas are central to the project's focus on rural development through modern scientific methods. The collaboration aims to raise awareness about preserving natural resources and fostering community partnerships among institutions.

The MoU was signed by NWC CEO Dr. Fouad bin Ahmed Al Sheikh Mubarak and KARRDA CEO Engineer Maher bin Abdullah Al Qathmi. This took place during the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Forum, held alongside the sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The agreement underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to addressing climate challenges.
The MoU outlines several key activities, including studies on using sewage sludge as fertilizer for soil reclamation. This will adhere to specifications set by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. Identifying suitable planting areas, methods, and sapling types according to each region is also part of the plan.
Additionally, a study will assess irrigation needs for targeted planting areas, determining water requirements. Plans include securing a nursery, preparing afforestation sites with fencing and digging, and transporting treated water from treatment plants to the reserve.
The installation, operation, and maintenance of networks, pumps, and tanks will ensure water supply for tree planting in designated areas. This initiative supports national efforts to tackle climate change while aligning with Saudi Arabia's directives for unified global environmental action.
The collaboration between NWC and KARRDA is a step towards expanding environmental vegetation in Saudi Arabia. It seeks solutions for global climate change challenges while supporting the Saudi Green Initiative's objectives.
