The UAE is actively pursuing a seat on the Human Rights Council for 2028-2030. Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of State, led the UAE delegation at the 58th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. She reiterated the UAE's dedication to advancing human rights through legislative improvements and international cooperation.

Al Kaabi highlighted recent legal reforms in the UAE, including changes to the Personal Affairs' Law and new federal laws on correctional facilities and social empowerment. These reforms reflect the country's diverse demographics and commitment to human rights. The UAE has also implemented various national policies aimed at enhancing fundamental freedoms.

The minister stressed that family protection is central to government policies. Laws against domestic violence have been enacted to safeguard families and promote social cohesion. In December 2024, the Ministry of Family was established to support stable family units and prevent disintegration.

Al Kaabi announced 2025 as the "Year of Community," a national initiative aimed at fostering unity and prosperity. This initiative aligns with the UAE's vision of empowering communities to overcome challenges and plan for future success.

The UAE is committed to collaborating with UN Human Rights bodies. A training program has been launched with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to develop a national workforce specializing in human rights. The country aims to work with other nations within the council to address global human rights issues.

Al Kaabi stated, "The Middle East region is facing significant challenges which require strengthening bridges of communication and dialogue, as well as prioritizing diplomatic solutions and intensifying regional and international efforts to support a comprehensive peace process." She emphasized that those affected by wars should be prioritized.

Regional Challenges and Peace Efforts

The minister highlighted that political solutions based on dialogue are crucial for preventing conflict escalation in the Middle East. The UAE prioritizes relief efforts to ease suffering in war-torn regions, aiming for comprehensive peace through diplomacy.

Al Kaabi noted that "the UAE, which has proudly engaged as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for three terms, has announced its nomination for council membership for 2028-30, reflecting the country’s belief in its key role to enhance and protect human rights at the international level."

The UAE continues its commitment to human rights through legislative reforms, community initiatives, and international cooperation. By focusing on family protection, community cohesion, and global partnerships, it aims to foster a stable society while addressing regional challenges through peaceful means.
