Northern Borders Region: A Botanical Treasure Trove With Ecotourism Potential
The Northern Borders Region of Saudi Arabia is rich in various aromatic, medicinal, and seasonal plants and trees. These natural resources play a crucial role in combating desertification, increasing vegetation cover and biodiversity, stabilizing the soil, and attracting ecotourism enthusiasts.
Nasser Al-Mujlad, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aman Environmental Association in the Northern Borders Region, highlighted the region's potential. He stated that the diverse terrain and rich plant life offer numerous opportunities for industries related to agricultural products. This can contribute to the development of ecotourism and create jobs for the region's residents.

According to Al-Mujlad, the Artemisia plant is one of the most important aromatic plants in the region. Growing up to 1.5 meters, Artemisia has various medicinal uses. Fresh Artemisia leaves can also be added to tea to enhance its taste and presentation.
Achillea, another notable plant in the region, features lemon-yellow flat-topped flowers that bloom in spring. Typically found in valleys, Achillea is used to add a pleasant scent to homes.
Al-Mujlad emphasized the positive changes brought about by the Saudi Green Initiative and the establishment of natural reserves. These efforts have led to the return of many trees and plants, contributing to the expansion of vegetation cover in the region.
The Northern Borders Region's wealth of plants not only supports environmental sustainability but also offers significant health and nutritional benefits. The region's unique flora presents opportunities for both local industries and ecotourism, fostering economic growth and job creation.
