North Riyadh And Salma Geoparks Achieve UNESCO Global Geoparks Status In Saudi Arabia
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark to its Global Geoparks Network. This marks a significant achievement for Saudi Arabia in preserving geoheritage and promoting sustainable development. The recognition follows UNESCO’s strict selection criteria, which ensure a balance between conservation, education, and sustainable development while involving local communities.
Khaled Al-Abdulkader, CEO of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC), praised this announcement. He sees it as proof of Saudi Arabia’s dedication to protecting its natural and historical heritage. Al-Abdulkader credited the achievement to the unwavering support of Saudi leadership in enhancing environmental initiatives and promoting sustainability.

Hussam Al-Turki, Senior Director of the Saudi Geoparks Initiative, highlighted the national pride associated with this milestone. He stated that including these geoparks reinforces Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving its cultural and natural identity. It also strengthens the country's role as a global leader in geoheritage conservation and sustainable development.
The newly recognized geoparks will become key destinations for both local and international visitors. They offer opportunities to explore Saudi Arabia’s geological wonders while fostering scientific and cultural awareness of geodiversity conservation. Beyond tourism, these geoparks play an essential role in managing natural resources sustainably.
