NHRI Strengthens Cooperation With UN To Protect Children's Rights And Vulnerable Groups

The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in Abu Dhabi recently hosted Mama Fatima Singhateh, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Sale and Sexual Exploitation of Children. This visit was part of Singhateh's official mission to the UAE. The discussions centred on enhancing children's rights protection and addressing issues faced by vulnerable groups.

Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, highlighted the importance of this visit. He reiterated the NHRI's dedication to advancing children's rights and shielding them from exploitation and abuse. This commitment aligns with their strategic priorities, which also cover women's rights, labour rights, and health rights.

NHRI and UN Discuss Children's Rights Protection

Kruse stated, "Protecting children's rights lies at the heart of the NHRI’s mission. Building a safe society for children begins with active partnerships with international organisations, and by promoting a culture of awareness and social responsibility. We are committed to continuing our efforts to ensure a safe environment where every child can enjoy their rights to growth, protection, and a life of dignity."

The meeting underscored raising public awareness as crucial in preventing child exploitation and abuse. Both parties agreed that education plays a vital role in safeguarding children from various forms of harm they might encounter.

Kruse also added, "The NHRI reaffirms its steadfast commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and to further develop national policies and practices in line with the highest international standards, with a special focus on safeguarding vulnerable groups, particularly children."

This visit is part of broader efforts to foster dialogue between national human rights bodies and UN entities. Such interactions contribute significantly to global initiatives aimed at ensuring children can fully exercise their rights without facing discrimination.
