Saudi Scholarship Program's New Phase Strengthens Ties With American Universities And Boosts Student Opportunities

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program, initiated by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in March 2022, underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to enhancing human capital. This initiative aligns with Vision 2030 and aims to place students in top global institutions. The program has seen significant success, with Saudi students in the Pioneers and Excellence tracks more than doubling.

Saudi Cultural Attaché to the US and Canada, Dr. Tahany Albaiz, highlighted that Saudi Arabia now ranks second in international undergraduate student numbers at MIT. The Kingdom also maintains a strong presence at prestigious universities like Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton. "This focus on innovation hubs shifts the entire scholarship paradigm toward developing national talent capable of driving Vision 2030 across all sectors," she stated.

Saudi Scholarship Program Deepens US University Ties

The Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission to the US oversees 14,037 Saudi students in American universities. It manages the largest Saudi scholarship program in recent history and facilitates nearly 89 institutional cooperation agreements between Saudi and American universities. This mission acts as a crucial link for educational collaboration between the two nations.

The healthcare sector has notably benefited from these scholarships. Between 2020 and 2025, 8,036 Saudi physicians and healthcare practitioners are expected to graduate from programs in the US and Canada. The number of health program graduates is projected to increase by 256% in Canada and by 62% in the US during this period.

Saudi Arabia's financial commitment to medical training in the US is substantial, with an investment of approximately $21.2 million for 2023–2025. This funding supports long-term clinical and research training, particularly in advanced specialties such as oncology and cardiac surgery. Continuous leadership support ensures that specialized training aligns with national healthcare needs.

The strategic importance of the Saudi-US relationship is further emphasized by HRH the Crown Prince's visit, highlighting educational and scientific collaboration. The partnership is set for growth with two American universities—the University of New Haven and Arizona State University—licensed to open branches in Saudi Arabia.

Building a Knowledge-Based Economy

This development signifies a commitment to building a knowledge-based economy by developing Saudi human capital to meet global standards. The expansion of educational opportunities within the Kingdom reflects a strategic vision for future growth and innovation.

The scholarship program's new phase demonstrates remarkable progress towards Vision 2030 goals through strategic investments in education and international partnerships. By focusing on elite institutions worldwide, Saudi Arabia aims to cultivate talent capable of contributing significantly across various sectors.
