New INTA Office In Dubai Strengthens UAE’s Role As A Leader In Innovation And Intellectual Property Protection

The International Trademark Association (INTA) has opened a new regional office in Dubai, marking a significant step in its global strategy. This move aims to enhance intellectual property (IP) protection in emerging markets. The office, located at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), will support 837 members from 263 organisations across the region.

Charles Shaban, INTA's Regional President for the Middle East and North Africa, emphasised that Dubai was chosen for its advanced infrastructure and strategic location. These factors connect regional and global markets effectively. He also highlighted INTA’s partnerships with the UAE Ministry of Economy, Dubai Chambers, and the Emirates Intellectual Property Association.

INTA Opens New Office in Dubai for Innovation

The new office will focus on combating counterfeit goods and promoting digital governance. It will also assist member countries in developing national IP strategies. Egypt and Saudi Arabia have already adopted such frameworks, setting an example for others in the region.

Shaban noted that the Middle East and North Africa region is crucial for trademark protection and creative economy growth. With a combined GDP of approximately US$5.2 trillion, this market is vital for economic development. The consumer base, valued at $768 billion in 2023, is projected to reach $1.4 trillion by 2032 due to economic diversification.

The opening of the Dubai office aligns with the region's shift towards innovation and economic diversification. IP protection is seen as essential for fostering investment and entrepreneurship. The office will also prepare for INTA’s Annual Meeting in Dubai in 2029, providing a platform for sharing expertise in innovation and intangible asset protection.

Shaban stated that INTA aims to enhance collaboration with government bodies, private sectors, and academic institutions through this new office. This collaboration is expected to strengthen IP legislation and enforcement across the region.

The establishment of this office underscores INTA's commitment to supporting emerging markets by providing resources and guidance on IP matters. As these markets grow, robust IP protection will be crucial for sustaining economic progress.
