Emirati Day For Education: NEP Empowers UAE PhD Holders To Become Leaders In Innovation And Policy Development

The UAE is celebrating Emirati Day for Education, highlighting its dedication to academic excellence and future-oriented learning. This day underscores the nation's commitment to education as a cornerstone of progress. The National Experts Programme (NEP) plays a pivotal role in this vision by fostering a strong network of Emirati PhD talent, bridging academia, industry, and national policymaking.

NEP has become a key platform for advancing high-level expertise, with 14 PhD holders and 57 master's degree holders among its ranks. This demonstrates the exceptional readiness of its experts. The programme accelerates the integration of PhD holders into STEM fields, education, sustainability, and innovation, ensuring the UAE remains a global hub for knowledge-driven advancement.

NEP Empowers UAE PhD Holders as Leaders

Khulood Alawadi, an Engineering Design Lecturer at NYU Abu Dhabi and NEP expert, emphasised the importance of education in shaping the UAE's future. "Education has always been the backbone of the UAE’s development," she stated. She highlighted how learning fuels innovation and empowers future generations to address global challenges through curiosity and critical thinking.

The demand for specialised research-driven talent is rising as the UAE transitions to an innovation-led economy. Over two decades, significant strides have been made in expanding the country's PhD talent pool. In 2011, 583 Emiratis had obtained PhDs; by 2022, this number tripled to 1,845, with women making up a significant portion.

The UAE recognises the strategic importance of attracting skilled professionals by expanding its 10-year Golden Visa programme to include all PhD holders. This move aligns with its vision of becoming a global hub for innovation and research. Additionally, around 50 PhD programmes are available across various fields like engineering, sciences, business, and humanities.

Traditionally seen as pathways to academia, PhDs now play diverse roles in national development. NEP experts are reshaping how these degrees contribute beyond university teaching. Hareth Alhashmi from 2welv noted that sustaining momentum requires advanced education pathways like doctoral programs and industry-driven PhDs to drive R&D and develop intellectual property.

The UAE is modernising its PhD education model to stay competitive globally. Changes include shifting from faculty-led to industry-driven programs and creating direct career paths from research into leadership roles in government and private sectors. Increasing industry partnerships ensures that PhDs contribute effectively to solving real-world problems.

Dr. Hoda Alkhzaimi from NYU Abu Dhabi highlighted that "PhDs are economic assets that drive industrial transformation." They elevate the workforce into a specialised talent pool that boosts economic output and resilience. Integrating PhD expertise into industries enhances competitiveness across AI, cybersecurity, energy, materials, biotech, and more.

On this day dedicated to education in the UAE, NEP leads efforts in developing PhD talent crucial for national growth and innovation. By investing in academic expertise today, the country aims for sustained progress and leadership on the global stage.
