NEOM Report Highlights The Growth And Future Of Women's Football In Saudi Arabia
NEOM, in collaboration with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), has released a report titled ‘Pioneering Change: Women’s Football in Saudi Arabia’. This document highlights the current state of women's football in Saudi Arabia, detailing past achievements and future opportunities. As the presenting partner of the first AFC Women’s Champions League, NEOM is dedicated to advancing women's football both regionally and globally.
The report outlines the remarkable growth of women’s football in Saudi Arabia, which is reshaping sports culture and societal norms. It aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 by promoting gender equality and healthier lifestyles. With Saudi Arabia set to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034, interest among women in football is expected to rise further.

Significant contributions from various stakeholders have been instrumental in increasing participation in women’s football from 2022 to 2023. The report includes insights from organisations like the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), the Ministry of Sport (MoS), and others. These efforts have led to historic milestones such as launching the Saudi Women’s Premier League and obtaining an official FIFA world ranking.
Jan Paterson, Managing Director of NEOM Sport, stated: "This report, created in collaboration with our contributors, is our way of truly understanding the landscape – where we are, what obstacles lie ahead and how the future could look. But it’s about more than just football. It’s about providing more opportunities for women and demonstrating the far-reaching impact that sport can have on individuals and communities."
The report also explores developmental pathways at grassroots levels, emphasising leadership and coaching's importance. Investment in infrastructure and accessibility has been crucial for commercialising women's football. These elements highlight how women's football drives strategic efforts that benefit both sports and communities.
Aalia Abdulaziz AlRasheed, Head of Women’s Football at SAFF, expressed pride in the transformation seen over six years since establishing a dedicated women’s department at SAFF. She said: "It has been a truly remarkable journey for Saudi women’s football over the last six years since the establishment of a dedicated women’s football department at the Saudi Arabian Football Federation."
Future Prospects for Women's Football
AlRasheed highlighted achievements like forming four national teams, organising five competitions, and engaging 77,000 girls through annual school leagues. She noted that their mission is to inspire girls nationwide to pursue their dreams in football. The journey has inspired millions globally.
Saudi Arabia's commitment extends beyond its borders with 62 active partnerships with international federations aimed at co-developing women's football. Currently, 60 international players from 20 different countries participate in Saudi leagues.
