NEOM's Green Hydrogen Facility Aims To Meet 10% Of Global Production Targets, Says Alkhorayef
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is developing the world's largest green hydrogen production facility in NEOM. This project aims to contribute 10% to global green hydrogen targets, aligning with the Saudi Green Initiative's goals of promoting clean energy and reducing carbon emissions. Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Alkhorayef highlighted this during a panel at the fourth annual Saudi Green Initiative Forum (SGI Forum 2024) in Riyadh.
Alkhorayef stressed the importance of international collaboration to achieve carbon neutrality. The SGI Forum 2024 coincides with the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). He also discussed efforts to support industrial facilities in adopting eco-friendly technologies, including initiatives like the Liquid Fuel Displacement Program launched this year.

Jubail Industrial City serves as a prime example of successful industry-environment coexistence. Over five decades, it transformed from desert land into a green oasis and one of the world's largest industrial cities. This city exemplifies how industrial progress can align with high environmental sustainability standards, according to Alkhorayef.
The Kingdom holds a significant position in global mining, with mineral resources valued at $2.5 trillion. Alkhorayef emphasized sustainable practices in mining operations, citing Wa’ad Al-Shamal city's phosphate mine as an example. This mine adheres to top environmental safety standards and supports local community development and educational initiatives.
Saudi Arabia has become one of the largest exporters of phosphate for fertilizers, aiding agricultural activities and enhancing global food security. "The Kingdom has achieved significant success in transforming raw materials into high-value products, including converting bauxite into aluminum products that can be utilized in advanced industries such as aviation and automotive manufacturing," said Alkhorayef.
The international Future Minerals Forum plays a crucial role in addressing future challenges within the mining sector. It provides a platform for discussing leading global sustainability practices, exploring innovative financing solutions, and forming effective partnerships. These discussions aim to advance sustainable mining practices globally.
Saudi Arabia continues to lead by example through its commitment to sustainable industrial practices and environmental stewardship. The Kingdom's efforts reflect its dedication to balancing economic growth with ecological responsibility, setting a benchmark for other nations aiming for similar achievements.
