NCVC Team Engages In Knowledge Exchange On Invasive Plant Management In South Africa

A delegation from the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development & Combating Desertification (NCVC) recently travelled to South Africa. The purpose was to exchange knowledge and strategies for managing invasive plant species. This visit included attending a conference titled "Managing Biological Invasion Across Different Environments in South Africa," where experts gathered to share insights and discuss methods for controlling invasive alien species.

The NCVC team participated in a specialised training course focused on the mechanical and chemical management of Prosopis plants. They also explored biological control techniques. Practical field visits were conducted at sites affected by various invasive species, including cacti, Prosopis, eucalyptus, Australian acacias, and conifers.

NCVC Team Visits South Africa for Expertise Exchange

During their visit, the team attended lectures on developing national monitoring lists for invasive plants. These sessions outlined best practices for preparing and categorising species. Additionally, they covered biological control methods using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies.

The lectures provided insights into South Africa's century-long experience in combating invasive species. They offered valuable information on assessing the economic impact of invasive plant spread and its effects on biodiversity.

This visit represents a significant step in strengthening collaboration between Saudi Arabia and South Africa in vegetation management. The NCVC aims to enhance its approach to sustainable environmental management through these knowledge-sharing efforts.

The conference brought together experts who presented activities related to invasive alien species. They discussed approaches for their control, impact assessment, and sustainable management, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the issue.

By engaging with international experts, the NCVC continues to improve its strategies for combating desertification. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to develop effective solutions for managing vegetation cover sustainably.
