NCVC Launches Awareness Campaign For International Day Of Forests To Highlight Importance Of Forests In Saudi Arabia
The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) is set to start an awareness campaign on its social media channels. This initiative, launching tomorrow, aims to underline the importance of forests in Saudi Arabia. It aligns with the International Day of Forests, celebrated globally on March 21. The campaign will focus on forests' roles in ecological balance and climate change mitigation.
Saudi Arabia's extensive forest areas are crucial for environmental protection and sustainability. These forests contribute significantly to oxygen production and carbon storage, supporting biodiversity and food security. They also play a vital role in combating desertification and reducing climate change impacts.

The arak tree (Salvadora persica) holds particular importance in Saudi Arabia. Its fruit, "kabath," provides nourishment for both humans and animals. Economically, parts of the arak tree are used to produce siwak, a traditional chewing stick, as well as natural oils. The tree is valued for its health benefits, especially in promoting oral hygiene.
Beyond its economic value, the arak tree has religious significance. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated: "Were it not a burden upon my nation, I would have ordered them to use the siwak before every prayer." This highlights the cultural importance of the tree in Islamic tradition.
The NCVC is actively working to restore and rehabilitate forests across Saudi Arabia. To date, they have planted over 3.5 million trees. Their efforts include identifying ancient trees and protecting forest areas with boundary markers and informational signs.
As part of the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030, NCVC implements strategic plans for forest rehabilitation and valley protection. They are also conducting a national forest survey project to establish a monitoring system for forest lands and track forest fires effectively.
These comprehensive efforts by NCVC aim to safeguard Saudi Arabia's natural wealth while promoting environmental sustainability. By raising awareness through their campaign, they hope to engage more people in preserving these vital ecosystems.
