NCVC Explores Proactive Drought Management Solutions At Global Workshop In Riyadh

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) held a workshop in Riyadh on Sunday. The event, titled "Global Drought Management Ecosystem," was part of the "Enhancing Drought Preparedness and Mitigation" initiative. It aimed to evaluate Saudi Arabia's susceptibility to severe droughts and implement strategies to lessen their impact.

The workshop highlighted the shift from crisis management to proactive risk management in dealing with droughts. Participants explored global strategies, focusing on assessing drought risks and understanding their economic, environmental, and social effects. Lessons from international case studies were applied to local challenges.

NCVC Discusses Drought Management Solutions

Sessions at the workshop delved into various topics, including comparing crisis management with risk management approaches for drought. They also discussed the objectives of the global drought management program and a 10-step process for developing national drought policies as outlined in the global guide.

Short- and long-term solutions to mitigate drought impacts were also covered. International case studies showcasing best practices in drought management were presented, offering valuable insights for local adaptation.

This initiative underscores NCVC's dedication to addressing drought issues and reducing their environmental and societal impact. The aim is to transfer knowledge and skills from Saudi Arabia's drought vulnerability assessment project, equipping stakeholders with tools for effective mitigation measures.

The NCVC is actively working towards restoring and protecting vegetation cover across Saudi Arabia. Their efforts include managing rangelands, forests, and national parks, combating logging activities, and promoting sustainable land use practices.

Contributions to Saudi Green Initiative

These initiatives align with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, contributing to sustainable environmental and economic development. By focusing on these areas, NCVC aims to advance both ecological preservation and economic growth within the Kingdom.
