Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi To Open On 22nd November 2025 At Saadiyat Cultural District

The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi is set to welcome visitors on 22nd November 2025 in the Saadiyat Cultural District. This opening marks a pivotal cultural event for the emirate. As the largest museum of its kind in the region, it will serve as a global hub for science, nature, and education. Visitors can explore Earth's history and engage in discussions about its future.

Spanning 35,000 square metres, the museum offers an immersive experience through 13.8 billion years of natural history. From the Big Bang to our solar system's formation, it covers life's evolution, including dinosaurs' rise and fall and Earth's diverse biodiversity. This addition enriches the UAE's cultural landscape.

Among its notable exhibits are three significant artefacts from deep time. One is Stan, a nearly complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton that roamed Earth 67 million years ago. Another is a 25-metre female blue whale specimen, showcasing marine biodiversity and evolution. The Murchison Meteorite completes this trio, containing grains older than our Solar System.

The museum's architecture, designed by Mecanoo, resembles natural rock formations rising from Saadiyat Island's landscape. This design reflects its mission to connect people with nature and inspire future generations to explore sustainability. Inside, permanent galleries guide visitors through time with themes like The Story of Earth and Resilient Planet.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, stated: "The opening of the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi marks a major milestone in our journey to shape the emirate’s cultural landscape." He emphasised that the museum frames Earth's story through an Arabian lens, highlighting regional fauna and flora.

The museum supports scientific knowledge through research in zoology, palaeontology, marine biology, molecular research, and earth sciences. Its educational initiatives aim to inspire future generations while promoting sustainability. The Arabian Peninsula's natural history plays a central role in its narrative.

Temporary Exhibitions and Global Collaboration

To celebrate its opening, two temporary international exhibitions will be featured: The March of the Triceratops and the 61st Wildlife Photographer of the Year. These exhibitions will launch its international programme and foster scientific collaboration locally and globally.

The museum joins other institutions like Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi in Saadiyat Cultural District. Together they form a global centre for knowledge exchange where humanity's past, present, and future converge into one living story.

One remarkable discovery showcased is Stegotetrabelodon emiratus—an extinct elephant species found in Abu Dhabi with tusks on both jaws. This unique trait offers insight into elephants' evolutionary journey while reflecting the region’s rich natural heritage.
