Nations Unite To Strengthen Global Commitment Against Antimicrobial Resistance At Jeddah Conference

The 4th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) took place on November 15-16. It concluded with the adoption of the Jeddah Commitments, marking a pivotal advancement in combating AMR, a major threat to public health and food security. The conference, themed "From Declaration to Implementation," gathered ministers, health experts, and stakeholders worldwide to address the urgent need for coordinated action against AMR.

Minister of Health Fahad Al-Jalajel emphasised the importance of these commitments in advancing the global AMR agenda. He stated, "I believe these commitments form the basis of a program that reflects our decisions at the UN. They are critical building blocks for member states and international bodies to significantly act against AMR." He stressed that it is crucial to act now and maintain momentum for future efforts.

Global Commitment Against Antimicrobial Resistance

The Jeddah Commitments build upon the Political Declaration on AMR from the 79th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting held in September. These commitments aim to transform political will into practical actions by enhancing governance, surveillance, stewardship, capacity building, research and development, and public awareness through educational initiatives.

International cooperation is highlighted as essential within these commitments. The Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR—comprising FAO, UNEP, WHO, and WOAH—plays a crucial role in supporting governments. A new Biotech Bridge is proposed to enhance research and innovation for biotechnological solutions to combat AMR.

Al-Jalajel announced two significant initiatives: an AMR One Health Learning Hub and a Regional Antimicrobial Access and Logistics Hub in Saudi Arabia. These hubs aim to foster global collaboration and improve access to essential antimicrobials and diagnostics. He also revealed Nigeria as the host for the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on AMR.

"We must continue to grow this 'coalition of the willing' to include a larger community of organizations and individuals that take a stand and act against AMR," Al-Jalajel stated. He introduced the troika system as a mechanism to sustain momentum through 2025 and 2026 until the next ministerial meeting.

Sustaining Momentum Through Troika System

The troika system is designed to deepen collaboration between past, current, and future hosts of these conferences. This initiative aims to ensure continuous progress leading up to the 5th Ministerial Meeting in 2026. Al-Jalajel expressed enthusiasm about working with Nigeria as part of this collaborative effort.

The Jeddah Meeting concluded with a call for all member states to uphold their commitments towards achieving the 2030 goals outlined in the UNGA Political Declaration on AMR. This collective action is vital for addressing antimicrobial resistance effectively on a global scale.
