UAE Ministry Of Culture Launches National Policy For Preservation Of Modern Architectural Heritage

The Ministry of Culture has introduced the "National Policy for the Preservation of Modern Architectural Heritage of the UAE" at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi's National Theater. This initiative, attended by officials and experts, aims to create a unified national vision for modern architectural heritage, which is a vital part of Emirati cultural identity.

Architectural landmarks hold immense cultural significance as they contribute to the UAE's national identity and tangible heritage. These structures embody various cultural values such as historical, architectural, social, economic, and environmental aspects. They play a crucial role in enhancing national unity and societal cohesion.

Mubarak Al Nakhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, highlighted that this policy aligns with efforts to preserve landmarks reflecting the UAE's deep-rooted identity. He noted that modern architecture is more than just buildings; it narrates the UAE’s development story. Protecting this heritage requires collective efforts from all stakeholders to ensure its preservation for future generations.

The launch event featured an initial meeting with federal and local stakeholders. Discussions focused on their contributions to modern architectural heritage and explored collaboration opportunities for implementing the policy. Priorities were set for initiatives planned over the coming years.

Shatha Al Mulla, Acting Assistant Under-Secretary for the Heritage and Art Sector at the Ministry of Culture, presented the policy's objectives. The goals include protecting modern architectural heritage, raising awareness, fostering national pride, enhancing stakeholder collaboration, promoting education and research, boosting cultural tourism and economic growth, strengthening global reputation in heritage protection, and supporting innovation.

The ceremony also included signing several agreements and memoranda of understanding. Notably, authorities signed the Charter for the Preservation of Modern Heritage, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding culturally valuable architectural landmarks.

This policy launch coincides with rapid developments across various sectors in the UAE. It reflects efforts in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah to protect modern architectural heritage as a model for national emulation.
