National Multiple Sclerosis Society Showcases 'Evident Presence' At Abu Dhabi Art Fair
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) is set to participate in the 17th Abu Dhabi Art Fair, starting on 19th November at Manarat Al Saadiyat. This year, NMSS will showcase "Evident Presence: A Community of Care," an immersive installation that brings to light the often-overlooked experiences of those living with multiple sclerosis (MS) through real stories.
The project consists of two main components: a video-based installation and a series of live performances and readings. These elements are presented by NMSS in collaboration with artists based in the UAE. The video component follows five individuals with MS, using visual storytelling to depict how they navigate changes in movement, stillness, and their connection to their bodies.

Participants in the video come from diverse backgrounds and ages, highlighting the invisible nature of MS. Symptoms like fatigue, numbness, or vision changes often go unnoticed. Through this work, viewers gain insight into the community's creativity and resilience.
Munira Al Sayegh, founder of Dirwaza Curatorial Lab, commented on the collaboration with NMSS: "The Year of Community sits at the centre of all that our collaboration with the NMSS aims to do. It embraces art as a means of expression, be it through the medium of film or live performance. Here, we hear stories and understand how they come to life. Most importantly, this project highlights the importance of a community that allows for safe spaces, for sharing, and for collective support."
Maral Alexandrian, Acting Executive Director of NMSS, emphasised the project's significance: "Evident Presence creates a space to witness the lived experiences of people with MS - not as conditions but as stories shaped by identity and care. True inclusion is built not only through awareness but through presence, empathy, and shared purpose."
Highlighting Invisible Symptoms
The installation aims to make visible what is often unseen about MS. By focusing on personal narratives and artistic expression, it offers a human portrait that underscores community strength and creativity. The project seeks to foster understanding and empathy among viewers by sharing these intimate stories.
This initiative aligns with NMSS's broader mission to raise awareness about MS while fostering inclusivity through art. By engaging audiences in this way, NMSS hopes to create a deeper understanding of MS beyond its medical aspects.
The Abu Dhabi Art Fair provides an ideal platform for such initiatives by bringing together diverse voices from around the world. Through projects like "Evident Presence," art becomes a powerful tool for advocacy and education.
