National Human Rights Institution Emphasises AI Ethics From A Human Rights Perspective At Dubai AI Week
The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) recently engaged in a panel discussion during Dubai AI Week. This event was organised by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence and overseen by the Dubai Future Foundation. The session, titled "Human-Centered AI: Ethics, Innovation, and Responsibility," included Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, along with experts from various sectors.
Key participants included Dr. Martin Wählisch from the University of Birmingham and Professor Oussama Khatib from Stanford University Robotics Lab. The session was moderated by Jan Neutze from Sandbox Dubai. Discussions centred on integrating ethical and human principles into AI technologies. Maqsoud Kruse highlighted the need to prioritise human rights in technological progress, stating, "In this era of rapid technological progress, human rights must remain an integral part of the AI lifecycle. An ethical approach to AI applications is a fundamental issue."

The session delved into several themes related to human-centred AI. It emphasised aligning technology with values such as justice, equality, and inclusivity. Participants discussed practical implementation of AI ethics to tackle issues like bias, accountability, and transparency. They also explored responsible design of human-machine interaction to ensure safe integration of AI into daily life.
Dr. Ahmed Al Mansoori and Dr. Saeed Al Ghfeli represented NHRI at this high-level session. Their involvement underscored NHRI’s commitment to integrating ethical considerations in AI development while promoting human rights in the UAE.
On the sidelines of this event, members of NHRI’s human rights departments took part in the "One Million AI Prompters" training course. This initiative aims to equip one million individuals with skills in AI and prompt engineering over three years, starting in Dubai.
This participation aligns with NHRI’s efforts to enhance institutional competence in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. It also reflects their dedication to advancing human rights protection and promotion within the United Arab Emirates.
The NHRI's involvement in these initiatives highlights its proactive approach towards keeping pace with technological advancements while ensuring that ethical considerations remain central to AI development.
