National Aquarium Abu Dhabi Welcomes Two African Manatees As Species Ambassadors
The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi has recently become the new home for two African manatees, marking a significant milestone as these creatures are the first of their species to serve as ambassadors in the region. These rare marine mammals, now residing in an environment that mirrors their natural habitat in Africa, underscore the aquarium's dedication to marine conservation and the wonders of aquatic life. The arrival of the manatees from Seoul, South Korea, was facilitated by a team of specialists, emphasizing the aquarium's adherence to international safety and medical protocols to ensure the well-being of these gentle giants throughout their journey.
As ambassadors for their species and symbols of conservation efforts, the African manatees are set to capture the hearts of visitors with their serene nature and intriguing behavior. The National Aquarium aims to foster a connection between the public and these majestic creatures, promoting marine conservation awareness. Paul Robert Hamilton, General Manager of the National Aquarium, highlighted the institution's commitment to providing an optimal environment for the manatees, focusing on their safety, happiness, and overall well-being.
In a broader effort to support marine conservation, the National Aquarium Abu Dhabi has made financial contributions to the African Aquatic Conservation Fund. This initiative aids in preserving manatees in West Africa and includes selling hand-crafted items by African artisans. A portion of these proceeds will be managed through a partnership with the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund and the African Aquatic Conservation Fund, aimed at conserving the species in their natural habitats.
The aquarium's educational programs play a vital role in informing visitors about marine conservation. Nicolas Heard, Acting Director-General of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with the National Aquarium and its potential to generate support for West African manatee conservation. Lucy Keith-Diagne, Executive Director of the African Aquatic Conservation Fund, also praised the collaboration for its commitment to biodiversity conservation and marine environment preservation.
From the first day of Eid al-Fitr, the public is invited to experience the beauty of the African manatees at the National Aquarium Abu Dhabi. This opportunity not only allows visitors to marvel at these unique creatures but also educates them on species conservation. The initiative highlights the critical role individuals play in ensuring a sustainable future for our oceans and protecting our planet.
