National Agriculture Centre Commences Operations To Enhance UAE Agricultural Production And Support Farmers
The National Agriculture Centre, a pivotal part of the 'Plant the Emirates' National Programme, has begun operations. Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), announced this initiative. It aims to support Emirati farmers, boost agricultural output, and enhance the competitiveness of UAE-grown produce in local markets.
During the Emirates Agriculture Conference and Exhibition's second day, Al Nuaimi outlined ambitious goals for the Centre. These include increasing productive farms by 20%, organic farms by 25%, expanding climate-smart agriculture to 30%, and halving agricultural waste. The event is held under His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan's patronage at ADNEC Centre Al Ain until 31 May 2025.

The Centre will implement programmes to support innovative agricultural projects. It will promote modern farming practices and technology while empowering farmers through specialised training. Additionally, it will offer advisory services to help farmers develop their projects and market their products effectively.
Sultan Salem Al Shamsi has been appointed as Director of the National Agriculture Centre. With a career spanning 26 years, he brings experience in agricultural value chains, project management, and government relations. Al Shamsi's leadership is expected to significantly impact UAE's agricultural sector.
Al Nuaimi highlighted Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's vision for a sustainable agricultural sector in his opening speech titled 'The Integrated Agricultural Ecosystem in the UAE – The Vision of the Founding Father.' Sheikh Zayed prioritised agriculture with substantial financial support, creating an empowered community of farmers across all Emirates.
Sheikh Zayed provided land, seeds, fertilisers, and essential tools to farmers. He also acquired large quantities of produce beyond immediate needs. "Sheikh Zayed's legacy lies in laying the foundation for a strong and promising agricultural sector," said Al Nuaimi.
Empowering Future Generations
The UAE has a unique opportunity to advance its agricultural sector by coordinating efforts among government bodies, private organisations, research centres, and innovators. This collaboration supports transitioning to modern farming systems that are environmentally friendly and climate-smart.
"This vision cannot be realised without empowering our farmers," added Al Nuaimi. He emphasised that youth are crucial in driving progress through scientific research and practical application. They are expected to lead transformative changes in this critical sector now and in future years.
Panel Discussion Highlights
A panel discussion on Day 2 focused on the National Agriculture Centre's strategy for supporting agriculture. Chaired by Sultan Salem Al Shamsi, it featured key figures like HE Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi and Rashid Mohammed Al Shariqi. The panel discussed strategies to enhance sustainable national food security.
The discussions explored promoting innovation in agriculture and empowering farmers with necessary resources. Strengthening partnerships between public and private sectors was also addressed alongside challenges facing agriculture today.
Engaging Community Participation
The Emirates Agriculture Conference and Exhibition 2025 aligns with the 'Plant the Emirates' National Programme launched last year. This programme supports UAE’s agricultural development goals by encouraging home-based food production and expanding green spaces across the country.
The programme also aims to reduce carbon footprints by promoting fresh local products while enhancing environmental sustainability efforts throughout UAE communities.
