Ne'ma Partners With Taste Of Dubai To Enhance Food Waste Reduction Efforts At Culinary Festival
ne'ma, the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, is teaming up with Taste of Dubai to enhance efforts in reducing food waste at events in the UAE. Their collaboration follows a successful partnership at Taste of Abu Dhabi 2024, where they diverted 310 kilogrammes of food waste from landfills, prevented 775 kilogrammes of CO2e emissions, and produced 62 kilogrammes of compost.
The collaboration aims to introduce impactful sustainability initiatives at one of Dubai's most anticipated culinary festivals. This sets a standard for major events in the region. Scheduled from 14th to 16th February at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre, Taste of Dubai is a leading social festival in the UAE, expecting around 25,000 visitors.

Throughout the three-day festival, ne'ma will collaborate with chefs, restaurants, and vendors to manage food waste efficiently. They will also educate attendees on practical ways to reduce food waste in their daily lives. This initiative aims to inspire long-term behavioural changes towards more responsible food consumption.
Khuloud Hasan Al Nuwais, Chief Sustainability Officer of Emirates Foundation and ne'ma Steering Committee Secretary-General, stated: "Following the success of our initiative with Taste of Abu Dhabi, we are proud to extend our impact at Taste of Dubai, engaging with the community and setting a benchmark for sustainable event management. By providing practical solutions and raising awareness, we aim to inspire long-term behavioral change and shift towards more responsible food consumption."
Maddy Spicer, Marketing Director of MENA Live Events (the organisers of Taste of Dubai), expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: "We are delighted to be partnering with ne’ma to be part of a solution that is so important for the community and wider global efforts to reduce food waste. As MENA Live Events continues to deliver major festivals in the region, we are proud that we can use our platform to spread joy and entertainment while also integrating meaningful initiatives on a large scale for thousands of people."
To ensure effective management of food waste during the event, trained personnel will assist with waste segregation. The initiative will implement a structured disposal process using branded bins for both customers and back-of-house operations. Efficient transportation and regular clearance will maintain effective waste management throughout the festival.
Sustainable Practices for Vendors
Vendors participating in the event will receive guidance on reducing waste. All collected food waste will be composted and repurposed for agricultural use. This approach not only reduces landfill contributions but also supports sustainable agricultural practices by turning waste into valuable resources.
This collaboration between ne'ma and Taste of Dubai highlights a commitment to sustainability within large-scale events. By focusing on education and practical solutions, they aim to influence positive change in how communities approach food consumption and waste management.
