First Najran Dates Festival Marks A Milestone In Economic And Cultural Prosperity

The Najran region is famous for its ancient and high-quality palm trees, which significantly contribute to the local economy. The first Najran Dates Festival, initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture's (MEWA) local branch, began in early September. This event honours the cultural and economic importance of palm trees to the people of Najran.

During a visit to the festival in western Najran City, an SPA reporter spoke with various officials and participants. Eng. Mareeh Al-Shahrani, Director-General of MEWA's Najran branch, highlighted the enthusiastic response from farmers eager to showcase their produce. The festival featured diverse activities such as cultural and educational seminars and recreational events.

Al-Shahrani noted significant participation from local palm growers, government and private entities, the Saudi Reef Program, and families involved in cottage industries. He emphasized that the event drew a large crowd of citizens and residents interested in exploring the region's renowned date varieties.

The festival aims to preserve Najran's rich heritage while boosting its palm-based economy. It seeks to expand the reach of this sector and enhance its economic and developmental benefits. Farmer Mohammed Al Mansour praised Najran for its exceptional date production quality. He mentioned varieties such as Al-Mawakil, Al-Barni, and Al-Rutab. According to him, the unique quality and size of fruits from different palm trees influence prices based on market demand and supply dynamics.

Local Expertise

Farmer Hussein Al Abbas shared his expertise in processing date derivatives native to Najran. His knowledge includes making fire-cooked molasses and Najrani date powder. These traditional methods highlight the region's dedication to preserving its agricultural heritage.

The festival not only celebrates the cultural significance of palm trees but also ensures its growth to meet farmers' needs and visitors' expectations.
