Najran's Agricultural Sector Thrives With Diverse Crops And Advanced Techniques Amid Coffee Boom

Najran Region is swiftly becoming a key agricultural centre in Saudi Arabia. Its climate, with moderate temperatures and an elevation of over 1,200 metres, is perfect for growing quality fruits and vegetables year-round. The region's agriculture includes protected farming, which allows crops like tomatoes and cucumbers to be grown all year while using up to 70% less water than traditional methods.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture notes that Najran has more than 5,000 farms covering over 27,000 hectares. Government backing for sustainable projects makes protected agriculture a promising investment. Coffee farming has surged here, with trees increasing from 4,000 in 2022 to over 116,209 across 111 farms today. This growth has made Najran a leading producer of specialty coffee in the Kingdom.

Najran's Agriculture Flourishes with Innovation

Grapes are another valuable crop in Najran. They mature up to 10 days earlier than those from other regions, giving them a marketing edge locally. The area also grows figs, strawberries, and citrus fruits. Sesame, beans, and stevia have been successfully introduced as well.

Due to limited water resources, farmers are adopting advanced techniques like soilless agriculture. Methods such as hydroponics and using inert media like peat moss enhance water efficiency and allow crops to grow in unusual settings. Field tests show these methods boost productivity for leafy greens and vegetables, offering good economic returns.

The National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture (Estidamah) in Najran supports quality investments by preserving vital citrus varieties and rare palm types unique to the region. The centre is also testing new crops like mangoes through field trials to attract investors interested in high-value fruit production suited to the local climate.

Research and Development Initiatives

Estidamah has produced over 1.7 million grafted seedlings recently. These include drought- and salinity-resistant citrus varieties that thrive in local conditions. This effort enhances agricultural stability by reducing risks from climate changes.

Najran's agricultural advancements highlight its potential as a major player in Saudi Arabia's farming sector. With ongoing support and innovative practices, the region continues to expand its agricultural capabilities effectively.
