Nahyan Bin Mubarak Highlights Birzeit University’s Role At Centennial Celebration In Dubai
Birzeit University marked its 100th anniversary with a special event in the UAE, hosted by the SEE Institute at The Sustainable City in Dubai. This gathering was notable for being the first of its kind outside Palestine, celebrating the university's evolution from an elementary school for girls in 1924 to a leading academic institution in the Arab world.
The event saw attendance from prominent figures, including Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence. Other attendees included Dr. Talal Shahwan, President of Birzeit University; Mohammed Asaad, Consul General of Palestine in Dubai; Saad Ghazal, Deputy Consul-General of Jordan in Dubai; Abdul Jabbar Odeh, Birzeit University's Ambassador in the UAE; Sa’d Abdul Hadi; and Dr. Lina Barakat from the university’s Board of Trustees.
Sheikh Nahyan praised Birzeit University's journey, highlighting its resilience and purpose. He stated, "I am pleased to express our unwavering support for this university, which has demonstrated resilience, determination, and a clear sense of purpose." He acknowledged the university's role in preserving Palestinian identity and fostering national consciousness.
Dr. Talal Shahwan emphasised the centennial's importance by reflecting on the university's legacy. He remarked that Birzeit University symbolises perseverance and resolve. "Birzeit University is not just an educational institution; it is a symbol of perseverance and resolve," he said. He stressed that education should connect with real-life experiences while reinforcing Palestinian culture.
Dr. Shahwan also highlighted scientific research's role in transformation. He noted that research helps address challenges and create innovative solutions. "Research is a tool for transformation," he stated, underscoring its importance in improving daily life and advancing knowledge.
Sheikh Nahyan reiterated the UAE’s commitment to supporting Palestine under President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's leadership. He stated that the UAE consistently supports Palestinian people across various fields and appreciates institutions like Birzeit University for their dedication to empowerment and progress.
Gratitude for Support and Collaboration
Dr. Shahwan expressed gratitude to Faris Saeed for hosting the event. "We extend our deepest appreciation to him," he said, acknowledging everyone's efforts in organising the celebration. This gesture highlighted the collaborative spirit behind the event's success.
At the ceremony's end, Birzeit University expressed heartfelt thanks to Sheikh Nahyan for his presence and inspiring words. The university emphasised that his participation reflects the UAE’s dedication to fostering strong ties with Palestine and its commitment to education development in the Arab world.
The university also extended appreciation to UAE leadership for hosting this milestone event. It recognised their role in championing academic institutions and promoting education across the region, further strengthening ties between Palestine and UAE through shared educational goals.
