Muslim Council Of Elders Discusses Role Of Religious Leaders In Climate Adaptation At COP29

The Muslim Council of Elders took part in a panel discussion titled "From Policy to Implementation: How Religious Leaders Can Lead Local Adaptation Efforts." This event was organised by 'Religions for Peace' during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, conveyed through Mohamed Bahr, Director of Strategic Planning at the Council, that humanity is at a crucial juncture in addressing the climate crisis. He emphasised that this challenge requires collective commitment and transformative actions for significant progress.

Role of Religious Leaders in Climate Adaptation

The session highlighted the vital role religious communities play in turning ethical and moral values into tangible actions. These values are rooted in compassion and stewardship of the Earth. Religions have historically been a strong force for justice and preserving humanity, underscoring their moral duty to tackle environmental issues.

Judge Abdelsalam stressed that religious leaders serve as moral guides within their communities. They help local populations, especially those with limited resources, respond effectively to climate challenges. Their unique position allows them to influence and mobilise communities towards sustainable practices.

He also pointed out the significance of supporting local wisdom, which holds valuable traditional knowledge for developing effective adaptation strategies. Solutions should be co-created with those directly affected by climate change to ensure they are both practical and relevant.

The 'Faith Pavilion,' organised by the Muslim Council of Elders with a global coalition of religious organisations, was praised as a milestone at COP conferences. This pavilion has successfully brought together religious leaders, scientists, and policymakers to explore solutions to climate challenges collaboratively.

Transitioning from Policy to Implementation

The Secretary-General called for a shift from policymaking to implementation. He urged governments and international bodies to create robust frameworks while encouraging religious leaders to provide moral guidance and community outreach. By working together, these stakeholders can form an alliance that empowers communities to lead climate adaptation efforts effectively.

In closing remarks, Judge Abdelsalam reiterated the need for collaboration among governments, international organisations, and religious leaders. This cooperation is essential for establishing effective policies and empowering communities worldwide to tackle climate challenges decisively.
