Muslim Council Of Elders Co-Hosts G20 Interfaith Forum In Cape Town To Address Global Challenges
The G20 Interfaith Forum (IF20), co-organised by the Muslim Council of Elders, took place in Cape Town, South Africa, from 10th to 14th August 2025. The theme was "Ubuntu in Action: Focusing on Marginalised Communities." This event gathered religious leaders, civil society groups, government officials, multilateral bodies, and scholars to discuss inclusive and ethical policy-making for global challenges.
During the opening session, the Muslim Council of Elders highlighted the crucial role religious leaders play in addressing global issues like conflicts and disputes. They advocated for a comprehensive understanding of relationship dynamics that includes both violence and peace. This approach emphasises the importance of nuanced perspectives in tackling today's challenges.

Adama Dieng delivered a speech on behalf of Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, stressing the need for justice for our planet. He particularly mentioned the suffering of Palestinians and the widespread conflicts causing numerous deaths and displacements. He described this situation as a significant test of our shared humanity.
The Muslim Council of Elders is led by His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar. Under his leadership, the Council is actively promoting peace, social cohesion, and ethical leadership. Their initiatives are rooted in values-driven approaches that highlight faith's role in addressing global issues through interfaith dialogue and youth empowerment.
The Council is also working to expand its influence across Africa with innovative peacebuilding initiatives. These efforts aim to empower local religious figures and build partnerships with regional organisations. This aligns with IF20's focus on tackling Africa's unique challenges and opportunities.
Additionally, the Council supports IF20's call to "leave no one behind," especially concerning food security, migration, and economic justice. They urged religious leaders to collectively advocate for justice and peace while striving to end wars for a better future for all humanity.
Judge Abdelsalam noted that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to promote tolerance, coexistence, and human fraternity globally. By focusing on ethical leadership and practical solutions, the Council aims to address pressing global challenges effectively.
