Muslim Council Of Elders: Addressing Modern-Day Challenges With Progressive Initiatives
The Council of Muslim Elders, led by His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, has been at the forefront of addressing contemporary issues through the influence of religious leadership since its establishment. Among its significant contributions is the "Peace Convoys" initiative, launched in 2015 in collaboration with Al-Azhar. This initiative involves deploying groups of scholars to various countries to engage in scientific and intellectual activities aimed at promoting positive integration of Muslims, countering Islamophobia, and easing religious tensions.
From 2015 to 2018, these Peace Convoys have visited countries across every continent, including the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, Spain, Central Africa, Chad, Nigeria, Colombia, and Kenya. Their mission underscores the Council's commitment to fostering understanding and peace globally.

Another pivotal initiative is "The 20 Principles Charter: Media Code of Ethics for Human Fraternity", introduced by the Arab Media Forum for Human Fraternity on 4th February 2020. This charter emphasizes the media's role in promoting tolerance and coexistence while rejecting extremism. It was launched on the anniversary of the Document on Human Fraternity's signing, highlighting its significance in fostering human fraternity.
The Council has also been active in organizing seminars and international conferences focused on peace and human coexistence. Notable events include the International Seminar on the Role of Religions in Promoting Peace (2016), the Conference for Achieving Peace in Myanmar (2017), the World Peace Conference (2017), and the Global Faith Leaders Summit on Climate Action (2023). These gatherings reflect the Council's dedication to dialogue and understanding across diverse communities.
On the Palestinian issue, the Council has consistently advocated for the rights of the Palestinian people and opposed any actions that compromise Jerusalem's historical and religious significance. It has also been vocal against hate speech directed at Islam, releasing a detailed report in 2021 on legal positions against such hate speech in Europe and the United States.
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Council played a crucial role in educating society about COVID-19 and participated in the "Prayer for Humanity" initiative. This global prayer underscored humanity's collective faith in overcoming the pandemic through unity and mutual support.
In 2023, the Council welcomed a special resolution by the Danish Parliament banning the "improper treatment" of religious texts. This legislation marks a significant step towards promoting mutual respect for religious beliefs and symbols.
The efforts of the Council of Muslim Elders under Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb's leadership demonstrate a steadfast commitment to leveraging religious influence for positive change. Through initiatives like Peace Convoys and ethical charters for media, along with its active role in global dialogues and advocacy for justice and human rights, the Council continues to make strides towards a more peaceful and integrated world.
