Museums Commission Hosts Engaging Talk On Conservation And Preservation Of Cultural Heritage

The Museums Commission recently organised an insightful discussion on the "Conservation, Preservation, and Display of Artifacts and Art Collections." This event is part of a monthly dialogue series focused on innovative strategies for preserving cultural heritage. The session was moderated by Tayeb AlTayeb, Acting Director of the Tariq Abdulhakim Museum.

Experts like Eman Zidan from the Red Sea Museum, Anne-Marie Afeiche, former Director of the National Museum of Beirut, and Dr. Hussein Kamal from the Grand Egyptian Museum shared their insights. They stressed the importance of conservation and restoration in safeguarding cultural heritage. Kamal highlighted the significant work done at the Grand Egyptian Museum’s Restoration Center.

Talk on Conservation and Preservation of Artifacts

Afeiche discussed Lebanon's historical challenges in artifact preservation, mentioning innovative methods like using cement blocks at the National Museum. Public involvement in conservation was a key theme. Zidan stated, "Protecting collections is a shared responsibility—it is about communities, individuals, and future generations."

Zidan also highlighted successful public engagement examples, such as a children's choir at the Tariq Abdulhakim Museum. This initiative celebrates musical heritage and connects young audiences to their cultural roots. The Museums Commission's campaign "Telling Tomorrow’s Story" aims to raise awareness about safeguarding cultural heritage.

The role of media in conservation awareness was another focus area. Speakers emphasised documenting restoration processes and sharing these stories through social media, television, and documentaries. Kamal explained how behind-the-scenes videos at the Grand Egyptian Museum will make restoration efforts accessible to the public.

This open talk underscores the Museums Commission’s dedication to protecting cultural heritage by advancing conservation practices across Saudi Arabia and beyond. By fostering collaboration and embracing innovation, they ensure that Saudi Arabia’s cultural legacy remains vibrant for future generations.
