Museums Commission Discusses Importance Of Regional Museums In Preserving Saudi Heritage And Identity

A virtual session titled "Regional Museums and Their Role in Preserving Saudi Cultural Heritage and Identity" was recently hosted by the Museums Commission. This event is part of their monthly Open Talks series, which aims to underscore the crucial role museums play in preserving national memory and shaping generational awareness. The session featured key figures from various regional museums across Saudi Arabia.

The discussion included insights from Eng. Arif Alsultan, Director of Dammam Regional Museum of Pearls, Gold, and Gemstones; Sulaiman Altorjom, Manager of Hail Regional Museum of Rock Art; Jazi Alghubari, Director of Najran Regional Museum of Mud Architecture; and artist and researcher Moath Alofi. Attia Alrajhi, the Museums Commission's Director of Public Relations and Content, moderated the session.

Attia Alrajhi provided an overview of the Kingdom's eleven regional museums, highlighting their unique features. He outlined the commission's broader goals, which include expanding access to cultural heritage and adopting innovative approaches to museum curation and display. These efforts aim to make cultural heritage more accessible to a wider audience.

During the discussion, participants emphasized how museum collections reflect each region's unique heritage. For instance, diving tools in the Eastern Region capture maritime legacy and local economy. In Najran, mudbrick architecture showcases adaptation to climate and natural resources. Meanwhile, rock carvings in Hail document settlement waves and symbolic expression evolution over time.

The conversation also highlighted the importance of digital documentation and advanced preservation methods. These techniques are essential for safeguarding treasures while ensuring wider accessibility for both the public and researchers. Such initiatives are vital for maintaining cultural heritage in a rapidly changing world.
