Muscat Metro Project Moves Closer to Reality, Set To Transform Oman's Public Transportation
Saeed bin Hamoud al Maawali, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, announced the completion of the Muscat Metro study. This comprehensive study is set to be reviewed by the Council of Ministers soon. Al Maawali shared these insights during an interview with Radio Muscat, highlighting the project's significance for Oman's capital.
The Muscat Metro, a project with a 55 km metro line and an investment value of RO 1 billion, is poised to be a pivotal development in Oman's public transportation system. Al Maawali emphasized the critical need for public transportation reform, pointing out the potential for a future crisis if the shift from individual to mass transit doesn't occur, particularly in terms of congestion and travel time.
"Public transportation is very important. If we do not reform how transportation is done, especially transitioning to mass transit, we will face a major crisis in the future," Al Maawali stated. He also mentioned, "The expansion of the Muscat Expressway will help curb congestion but is not a sustainable long-term solution."
Projecting into the future, Al Maawali underscored the necessity for a significant public transportation project between 2025 and 2030 to avoid another crisis post-2030. The Muscat Metro, expected to be the Sultanate's first metro system, is seen as a crucial step towards this goal. However, before its establishment, an enhanced public transport system is deemed necessary.
Eng. Abdullah al Busaidi, a Net Zero Consultant at MoTCIT, in conversation with the Observer last year, revealed that the Ministry is finalizing a public transport strategy. This strategy is part of the second phase of the Green Mobility strategy, scheduled for implementation from 2025 to 2028, marking Oman's commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.
The Muscat Metro project not only represents a significant leap towards improving urban mobility in Oman's capital but also showcases the nation's dedication to sustainable development and reducing congestion on its roads. As the plans move forward, the Muscat Metro emerges as a beacon of progress in the Sultanate's transport infrastructure.
