Muscat Expressway Reopens With Major Expansion To Ease Traffic
Following the completion of maintenance work, Muscat Municipality and Royal Oman Police have reopened the Muscat Expressway from Intersection No. 2, Madinat Al Illam Bridge, to Intersection No. 1, City Centre Qurum Bridge, heading towards Muttrah. The municipality had previously announced the expansion of the expressway project as a major milestone after floating a tender in March.
The expansion project involves adding three lanes in each direction, making it the widest road in Oman with a total of 12 lanes. It also includes enhancing several multi-level intersections, extending acceleration and deceleration lanes connected to the expressway, widening existing bridges, and implementing necessary drainage channels and slope protections.
In addition to these improvements, the project covers essential aspects such as floor paving, service diversion works, installation of concrete barriers, and replacing the current lighting infrastructure with an environmentally friendly LED lighting system.
The Muscat Expressway was inaugurated during Oman's 40th National Day celebrations in 2010 and has since played a crucial role in connecting residential and commercial hubs within the capital. The expressway has significantly reduced traffic congestion along Sultan Qaboos Street by providing an efficient alternative route for commuters. With this recent expansion project, it is expected that traffic flow will further improve within the city.
