Al-Ahsa Markets Burst Into Colour With Mulberry Season, Offering Health Perks
Al-Ahsa Governorate's fruit and vegetable markets are currently experiencing the vibrant hues of mulberry season. These small, pyramidal-shaped fruits, varying in shades from red to black, are a favorite among the locals. Known for their appealing look and delicious taste, mulberry trees are commonly found in the households of Al-Ahsa, contributing significantly to the area's diverse agricultural output. The harvesting period for these berries is notably short, spanning just about a month post-winter and before the onset of summer.
The freshly harvested mulberries are primarily recognized for their red hue, which can evolve into blue or purple as they mature. Their flavor also changes with ripeness, from sweet when fully ripe to slightly tart in their earlier stages. Despite their limited availability, mulberries have garnered a loyal fan base among both farmers and consumers. A recent visit by a Saudi Press Agency reporter to an Al-Ahsa market revealed that the price of mulberries varies with their size and ripeness, costing between SAR5 and SAR15 per half kilogram.

Vendors at the market highlighted the versatility of mulberries, noting their use in various culinary applications such as cakes, ice creams, and as decorative elements in dishes. Some patrons prefer consuming them as juice, while others opt to store or freeze the berries for later use. Dr. Hossam Al-Din Hussein Mahmoud, a professor of fruit science at King Faisal University in Al-Ahsa, emphasized the seasonal nature and premium pricing of these berries. He mentioned that the region cultivates several types of mulberries, including red, Iranian, Kashmiri, and American varieties.
Dr. Mahmoud also shed light on the ongoing research at the university's College of Agriculture and Food Sciences. This research aims to document and classify all fruit strains and varieties found in Al-Ahsa, including mulberries. He further elaborated on the health benefits associated with mulberry consumption. These berries are rich in antioxidants, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are known to aid in blood sugar control, potentially reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
The high anthocyanin content in mulberries offers anti-inflammatory benefits that may decrease disease risk while enhancing immune and digestive system functions. Additionally, their consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, lower blood cholesterol levels, improved skin health, and heart rate regulation. Mulberries might also possess diuretic properties and play a role in treating digestive disorders.
