Mubadala Backs Australia's Largest Urea Plant To Enhance Food Security
Mubadala Investment Company, the sovereign investor based in Abu Dhabi, has recently made a significant move by investing in Perdaman's A$6.4bn (US$4.2bn) urea project located in Western Australia. This venture, undertaken alongside Global Infrastructure Partners, marks a monumental investment in the Australian fertiliser industry, setting a new benchmark for the sector. The facility, poised to be the largest of its kind in Australia and ranking among the world's most extensive urea fertiliser plants, is designed to produce over two million tons of urea annually.
This strategic investment is set to address the growing demand for high-quality fertilisers while significantly reducing Australia's dependency on imported products. The initiative is not just an economic venture but also a step towards enhancing food security for approximately 90 million people by providing essential nutrients needed for agriculture. The plant is expected to leverage state-of-the-art technology to ensure energy efficiency and minimal emissions, aligning with global environmental standards.

One of the standout features of this project is its commitment to sustainability. By incorporating clean technologies such as solar energy and green hydrogen, the facility aims to drastically reduce industrial emissions. This approach not only displaces the need for coal-based urea but also sets a clear path towards achieving a net-zero carbon footprint by 2050, as pledged by Perdaman, a leading entity in the chemicals and fertiliser industry.
Saed Arar, Executive Director of Traditional Infrastructure at Mubadala, expressed enthusiasm about the investment. He highlighted that this move aligns perfectly with Mubadala's mandate for responsible investing. It supports not only national but also regional ambitions towards ensuring food security while simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of urea production.
The collaboration between Mubadala Investment Company and Global Infrastructure Partners with Perdaman underscores a shared vision for sustainable development and innovation in the fertiliser sector. This project not only signifies a leap forward in meeting agricultural needs but also exemplifies a commitment to environmental stewardship and energy efficiency.
