Mubadala Energy Unveils Significant Gas Discovery In Indonesia's South Andaman
Mubadala Energy, a leading international energy company based in Abu Dhabi, has recently announced a significant gas discovery at the Tangkulo-1 Exploration well located in South Andaman, approximately 65 kilometres offshore North Sumatra, Indonesia. This discovery follows closely on the heels of another major find at the Layaran-1 well within the same region, marking the company's second successful deep water well operation.
The Tangkulo-1 well was drilled to a depth of 3,400 meters in waters measuring 1,200 meters deep. The exploration revealed an 80-meter gas column within a high-quality Oligocene sandstone reservoir. This was confirmed through comprehensive data collection efforts, including a 72-meter full core retrieval, wireline logging, sidewall core sampling, and pressure and fluid sampling. A novel Drill Stem Test (DST) design was employed at the site, resulting in a successful flow rate of 47 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of high-quality gas and 1,300 barrels of condensate. Despite limitations imposed by testing facilities, the estimated capacity of the well ranges between 80-100mmscf/d for gas and over 2,000 barrels for condensate.

Mansoor Mohammed Al Hamed, CEO of Mubadala Energy, expressed his enthusiasm about the discovery: "When added to our recent success at Layaran-1, this game-changing discovery promises to transform Indonesia’s and Southeast Asia’s energy landscape." He highlighted the significance of South Andaman as one of the globe's most promising energy plays. Al Hamed also emphasized the company's commitment to supporting government development timelines and playing a significant role in the energy transition with its gas-biased strategy.
With an 80% working interest in South Andaman, Mubadala Energy stands as the largest net acreage holder in the region. The Tangkulo-1 discovery is pivotal for the development story of this cluster, unlocking further potential in the southern part of the block and indicating an additional multi-trillion cubic feet (TCF) of prospective gas resource in nearby structures.
This recent discovery alongside Layaran-1 adds substantial contingent volume to Mubadala Energy's portfolio and sets a solid foundation for continued organic growth in the region through further exploration and appraisal activities. The company's strategic focus on gas underscores its commitment to sustainable energy development and its role in facilitating a smoother transition towards cleaner energy sources.
