Mubadala Capital And SailGP Announce Brazil's Entry Into Global Sailing Championship
Mubadala Capital, a subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company, and SailGP have announced a strategic investment to establish a new SailGP Team representing Brazil. This marks the first South American squad in the SailGP league and the initial team confirmed for Season 5. The acquisition continues the partnership between Mubadala and SailGP, focusing on sustainability and innovation.
The new team will enhance training opportunities for Emirati sailing talent, both locally and internationally, building on the success of the inaugural Abu Dhabi race earlier this year. The Brazil Team will participate in the next SailGP event in the UAE, offering fans a chance to experience world-class sailing.

The inclusion of a South American team strengthens the tournament and supports the Emirate's ambition to become a global sports and entertainment hub. This move underscores Mubadala’s and the UAE’s commitment to sustainability on an international scale.
Homaid Al Shimmari, Deputy Group CEO of Mubadala, stated, "Together with SailGP, we are building a community dedicated to creating a better sport and a better planet. Our responsible investing approach aligns with SailGP’s goal to be the most sustainable global sports platform."
SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts commented, "Brazil has an incredible history in Olympic sailing. Their entry into SailGP opens up a significant market and strengthens our connection to the region."
Oscar Fahlgren, Chief Investment Officer of Mubadala Capital, added, "This acquisition aligns with our long-term commitment to Brazil and enhances our ability to create lasting social and environmental impact."
Partnership with IMM
The Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team will collaborate with Brazilian sports firm IMM, led by ex-Olympic sailor Alan Adler. IMM’s portfolio includes major events like the Rio Open and São Paulo Grand Prix Formula 1 race.
Adler expressed his enthusiasm: "We are eager to engage Brazilian fans and bring this dynamic team to life. The team will inspire and promote the sport across South America."
Season 5 Commencement
Brazil will join the global racing championship from November 2024. SailGP features national teams competing in high-tech 50-foot foiling catamarans at iconic venues worldwide. Currently in its fourth season, SailGP hosts 13 events annually, with further expansion planned for Season 5.
Ongoing Partnership
The formation of the Brazilian team is part of SailGP’s expanding relationship with Mubadala. Last year, Mubadala announced its Global Partnership with SailGP through 2026. Mubadala will serve as Title Partner for SailGP's New York event this weekend, having previously sponsored events in San Francisco and Abu Dhabi.
Mubadala began its partnership with SailGP as the title sponsor for the San Francisco race in Season 3. The partnership extended further with the launch of the Abu Dhabi race and now includes off-water initiatives.
New Production Partnership
Last month, both organizations announced a production partnership with Strata Manufacturing to develop new hydrofoils and rudders for Season 5's F50 catamarans. This partnership integrates responsible investment practices with advanced technology while promoting environmental stewardship within sport.
Mubadala will continue supporting SailGP Inspire - the league’s youth outreach program - which has engaged over 21,000 young people globally.
The Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix begins tomorrow (Saturday, June 22), marking the penultimate stop on Season 4's calendar before the Grand Final in San Francisco (July 13-14).
