The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) recently provided insights into this historical communication method through an interview with Faisal Al-Sharif, a seasoned wireless operator with an impressive four-decade career. Al-Sharif shared his experiences and the significant role Morse code played in the Kingdom's development, especially during pivotal moments such as the confirmation of Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr moon sightings.

The inception of wireless communication in Saudi Arabia traces back to the establishment of the first wireless office in AlUla province, under the reign of King Abdulaziz Al-Saud. This initiative marked a significant leap forward in the Kingdom's efforts to enhance its telecommunications infrastructure. Al-Sharif recounted how Morse code, with its unique language of sounds and tones, was transmitted through both wired and wireless means to connect different regions of the country.

Morse Code's Role in Ramadan, Eid Announcements

One of the critical functions of Morse code was its use in confirming moon sightings for Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr, which are significant events in the Islamic calendar. According to Al-Sharif, witness testimonies were presented before a judge in AlUla, initiating a telegram that was sent to the Supreme Judicial Council in Makkah. This message was then relayed throughout the Kingdom as a Morse code telegram, ensuring that the sighting was communicated swiftly and efficiently. The first recorded instance of such a notification dates back nearly 94 years ago, on 29/8/1351 AH.

King Abdulaziz's Vision for Telecommunications

King Abdulaziz's foresight in expanding telegram centers across the Kingdom was instrumental in modernizing its communication systems. Al-Sharif highlighted how these centers were outfitted with state-of-the-art technology for their time, including portable Morse code devices that were housed in what was colloquially known as "a wireless suitcase." To guarantee seamless communication, dedicated wireless operators were always present with King Abdulaziz during his travels, managing these devices to facilitate the transmission and reception of telegrams.
