Morocco And AstraZeneca Collaborate To Enhance Healthcare Innovations
The Moroccan King Mohammad VI Foundation for Science and Health, alongside AstraZeneca, has formalised a protocol agreement in Rabat. This partnership aims to establish Centres of Excellence focusing on rare diseases. The initiative seeks to bolster Morocco's healthcare system and enhance patient care for those with such conditions.
In Casablanca, the Mohammad VI Foundation for Science and Health achieved a milestone by completing Africa's first ABO-incompatible kidney transplant. This significant medical advancement involved a kidney transplant between donor and recipient with differing blood types. It was made possible through collaboration among various departments, including anesthesia, nephrology, and hematology.

This collaboration is part of a larger effort to provide innovative solutions for patients. It focuses on facilitating diagnosis, treatment access, and training healthcare professionals. The plan includes developing advanced diagnostic platforms and integrating modern genetic testing technologies.
The Mohammad VI University Hospital Center in Tangier exemplifies medical excellence while offering comfort and innovation. Opened in 2023 by King Mohammad VI, this hospital spans 23 hectares and houses around 800 beds. It aims to deliver high-quality healthcare with a focus on humanising services.
The successful kidney transplant was supported by Prof. Lionel Rostaing, an expert in ABO-incompatible transplants. This achievement underscores the foundation's dedication to advancing medicine in Morocco and across Africa by expanding organ transplantation access.
AstraZeneca's commitment to sustainable growth in Morocco is reinforced through this agreement. It builds upon previous successful collaborations with the Mohammad VI Foundation for Science and Health. Together, they aim to address urgent medical needs and create lasting impacts for patients throughout the Kingdom.
The Tangier hospital revitalises national healthcare with its integrated approach that combines training, innovation, and humanised care. It represents a new generation of healthcare institutions dedicated to accessible, comprehensive medicine focused on future challenges.
This joint venture also plans to establish multidisciplinary hubs for treatment, research, and training. By doing so, it aims to address urgent medical needs while creating tangible impacts for patients across Morocco.
