UAE: MoHRE Announces Implementation Of Midday Break For Workers Starting June
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced the continuation of the Midday Break rule. This regulation prohibits work under direct sunlight from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm, starting 15 June until 15 September 2025. The initiative aims to protect workers from heat-related illnesses during summer, aligning with international safety standards.
Mohsin Ali Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection & Compliance at MoHRE, stated that the Midday Break has consistently achieved over 99% compliance. This reflects the UAE's strong commitment to worker safety and the private sector's awareness of protecting human capital. He emphasised the importance of occupational health and safety in labour regulations.

Dalal Alshehhi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Protection at MoHRE, highlighted the collaboration between the Ministry, private sector, and community in supporting the Midday Break. She noted that many partners have developed initiatives to aid workers during this period. These efforts align with the 'We the UAE 2031' vision, promoting social responsibility and humanitarian values.
Alshehhi praised companies that have created rest areas for workers during breaks. She encouraged other businesses to adopt similar measures to enhance worker comfort and productivity. Providing shaded areas and cooling equipment is essential under the Midday Break terms.
The Midday Break regulations require companies to offer necessary supplies like fans, drinking water, and first-aid kits at worksites. However, certain tasks are exempt due to their nature or public interest needs. These include activities like asphalt laying or emergency repairs affecting community services.
The Ministry monitors compliance through its system and encourages public reporting of violations via its call centre or online platforms. Companies breaching these rules face fines of AED5,000 per worker per violation, up to AED50,000 for multiple breaches.
To ensure adherence to the Midday Break rules, MoHRE will intensify awareness campaigns in partnership with public and private sectors. Field visits will be conducted to educate both employers and employees about compliance requirements. These efforts aim to reinforce understanding of occupational health standards.
The initiative underscores a sustainability-focused approach by prioritising worker safety during extreme temperatures. By maintaining high compliance rates and fostering partnerships across sectors, the UAE continues to uphold its commitment to a safe working environment for all nationalities residing in the country.
