MoHAP Rolls Out National Newborn Screening Guidelines In The UAE

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has introduced the National Newborn Screening Guidelines to unify and improve newborn medical examinations across the UAE. These guidelines aim to prevent early health issues by standardising necessary laboratory and clinical tests, as well as identifying designated reference laboratories nationwide.

The new guidelines ensure consistent screening methods, covering detection, diagnosis, and intervention for conditions affecting newborns' health or long-term survival. This initiative aims to reduce morbidity and mortality rates among newborns while enhancing healthcare providers' capabilities. Additionally, it stresses the importance of parental guidance and health education to promote healthy lifestyles from birth.

UAE Newborn Screening Guidelines Launched

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector, stated that ensuring newborn health is a top priority. He emphasised MoHAP's commitment to providing comprehensive preventive and therapeutic health services that meet international standards. "MoHAP will make every possible effort to promote disease prevention and establish robust healthcare systems designed to support healthy lifestyles across all age groups," he said.

The guidelines also focus on early diagnosis of genetic diseases, metabolic and endocrine disorders, hearing abnormalities, heart defects, and other critical congenital anomalies. They support creating a comprehensive database on genetic diseases and aim to raise community awareness about the importance of newborn screening. This programme will be implemented in both government and private hospitals across the UAE.

During the launch event, high-profile officials attended, including Dr. Nada Hassan Al Marzouqi, Director of Public Health and Prevention Department; Dr. Suad Al Awar, Head of the Family Health Department at the Ministry; along with members of the National Newborn Screening Committee from both government and private health sectors.

Workshop Highlights

At a workshop held during the launch event, members of the National Newborn Screening Committee were honoured. Dr. Suad Al Awar provided an overview of the National Newborn Screening Programme. The session covered various aspects such as procedures, result reporting methods, blood spot tests, hearing screenings, critical congenital heart disease screening for newborns, clinical pathways, key performance indicators, and an overview of recent results and statistics.

Dr. Al Rand highlighted that these national guidelines would serve as a crucial reference for improving future generations' health. He noted that this aligns with MoHAP's strategic objective of achieving "high-level health care" through effective management of health and community programmes to enhance overall quality of life.

The newly introduced guide aims to standardise care quality for all newborns through continuous quality improvement principles. It provides clear screening approaches and pathways for conditions requiring necessary referrals.

This initiative is expected to significantly enhance healthcare systems in the UAE by promoting disease prevention and supporting healthy lifestyles across all age groups.

The launch event underscored MoHAP's dedication to aligning with international best practices in newborn screening. The guidelines are set to provide a consistent framework for healthcare providers nationwide.
