The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) in the UAE recently completed an official visit to Spain. The purpose was to enhance international cooperation in organ donation and transplantation, aligning with the UAE's national objectives to improve global partnerships and quality of life.

During their visit, the delegation engaged with prominent academic and medical institutions focused on organ donation and transplantation. Discussions centred on sharing expertise and adopting cutting-edge medical technologies and best practices from around the world.

MoHAP Collaborates with Spain on Organ Donation

At the University of Barcelona’s CREATIO centre, the delegation explored groundbreaking research in cellular therapy, regenerative medicine, and gene therapy. They also toured some of Europe's most advanced laboratories to gain insights into these fields.

The group visited the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona to learn about its organ transplant coordination unit. They examined organ preservation technologies and advanced practices like Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) and Ex-situ Perfusion, which boost transplant success rates.

Both parties discussed implementing a DCD programme in the UAE. This initiative aims to expand organ donation, reduce waiting lists, and save more lives through transplants of vital organs such as livers, kidneys, and lungs.

The delegation also met with the DTI Foundation, a leading international body in organ transplantation. They explored future collaboration opportunities in training, research, and technology advancements related to organ preservation systems and biomedical research.

Commitment to Global Partnerships

Dr. Amin Al Amiri stated that this visit underscores the UAE’s dedication to establishing a world-class healthcare system through global partnerships. He emphasised that the Hayat programme reflects the nation's humanitarian values by saving lives and enhancing health sustainability.

The delegation included Dr. Ali Abdulkarim Al Obaidli, Dr. Maria Gomez, and Dr. Fathia Al Awadhi. These experts play key roles in overseeing various aspects of organ donation and transplantation programmes within the UAE.

This visit is part of ongoing efforts to develop national expertise by integrating international best practices in organ donation and transplantation into the UAE's healthcare framework.
