Mohammed Bin Salman Project Restores Historic Al-Oudah Mosque In Diriyah To Preserve Cultural Heritage

The Al-Oudah Mosque in Diriyah, a notable heritage site in the Riyadh Region, is undergoing extensive restoration. This is part of the Mohammed bin Salman Project for Developing Historic Mosques, now in its second phase. The project aims to restore the mosque's historical and architectural significance, using traditional Najdi construction methods to revive its original splendour.

Al-Oudah Mosque, among the oldest in the area, has seen three restorations, with the last one about 15 years ago. The current renovation will expand its area from 794 square meters to 1,369.82 square meters. This expansion will increase capacity from 510 to 992 worshippers, reflecting a balance between preserving history and meeting community needs.

The restoration project includes 30 mosques across all 13 regions of Saudi Arabia. In Riyadh alone, six mosques are being restored, while Makkah has five and Madinah four. Other regions like Aseer have three mosques under renovation, with two each in the Eastern Region, Al-Jouf, and Jazan. Single mosques are being restored in Northern Borders, Tabuk, Al-Baha, Najran, Hail, and Qassim.

The project employs traditional Najdi techniques such as mud construction and natural materials suitable for desert climates. These methods ensure that the mosque retains its historical essence while incorporating modern standards for sustainability. Saudi companies with expertise in heritage restoration are leading these efforts.

The Mohammed bin Salman Project's second phase follows a successful first phase that restored 30 historic mosques across ten regions. This initiative aligns with Vision 2030 by preserving architectural heritage and integrating it into contemporary mosque designs.
