Mohammed Bin Salman Project Trains Saudi Students In Historic Mosque Restoration Techniques

The Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques, in collaboration with the Heritage Commission and the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth), is offering a unique opportunity for Saudi students. Fifteen students are currently engaged in restoring historic mosques through a six-month field training program. This initiative allows them to learn traditional mud-brick construction and woodworking techniques under the guidance of skilled Saudi engineers.

Another group of 15 students is expected to join this program soon, with their training extending into early 2026. The program is structured into two distinct tracks. The first track focuses on traditional construction methods, providing hands-on experience in mud-brick building. Trainees work on historic mosques using authentic materials, supervised by experts in preserving mud-brick heritage.

The second track emphasizes the craft of traditional Najdi doors. Participants receive training in carpentry, carving, and production, which helps preserve this ancient art form. This dual-track approach not only equips students with valuable skills but also contributes to sustaining cultural heritage.

The project has already covered 30 mosques across 10 regions during its first phase and another 30 mosques across 13 regions in its second phase. It aims to revive authentic architectural styles and traditions of historic mosques while raising awareness of their cultural significance.

Guided by four main objectives, the project seeks to prepare historic mosques for worship and restore their architectural authenticity. It also aims to highlight Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage and strengthen its religious and cultural standing. These goals align with Vision 2030, which emphasizes preserving national heritage and promoting cultural and architectural legacy.

By balancing traditional and modern construction standards, the project ensures long-term sustainability. This initiative not only preserves historical architecture but also educates future generations about its importance, fostering a deeper appreciation for Saudi Arabia's rich cultural history.
