Mohammed Bin Salman Project Enhances Al-Rumaila Mosque's Cultural Significance In Riyadh

Al-Rumaila Mosque, located in the Al-Dhahirah District of Riyadh, is among the oldest mosques included in the Mohammed bin Salman Project for Developing Historic Mosques. This initiative, now in its second phase, focuses on restoring and preserving the mosque's religious and cultural importance while maintaining its ancient architectural style using sustainable methods.

The project will expand the mosque's area from 1,184.69 square meters to 1,555.92 square meters. This expansion will increase its capacity from 327 to 657 worshippers. Although the exact construction date is unknown, the renovation will reflect its original design, showcasing the traditional architectural style of old Riyadh mosques.

The restoration project aims to preserve historical legacies by blending antiquity with aesthetic appeal. The renovation will use clay construction techniques and natural materials, primarily following the Najdi style. This approach is known for adapting well to local environments and hot desert climates while reflecting local cultural needs.

Al-Rumaila Mosque is one of 30 mosques across Saudi Arabia being restored in this phase. These include six mosques in Riyadh, five in Makkah, four in Madinah, three in Aseer, two each in the Eastern Region, Al-Jouf, and Jazan, and one each in Northern Borders, Tabuk, Al-Baha, Najran, Hail, and Qassim.

The Mohammed bin Salman Project has four strategic goals: restoring historic mosques for worship; preserving their architectural authenticity; highlighting Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage; and enhancing their religious significance. The project aligns with Vision 2030 by integrating architectural heritage into modern mosque designs.

This second phase follows a successful first phase that restored 30 historic mosques across ten regions. Saudi companies specializing in heritage restoration are responsible for carrying out these developments.
