Mohammed Bin Salman Project Revitalises Historic Al-Qalaah Mosque In Riyadh
The Mohammed bin Salman Project for Developing Historic Mosques is in its second phase, focusing on the renovation of Al-Qalaah Mosque in Hotat Bani Tamim, Riyadh. Established in 1250 AH, this mosque will be restored by blending traditional and modern construction techniques. The aim is to preserve its historical elements while ensuring sustainability and incorporating developmental influences.
Al-Qalaah Mosque is named after the castle of Imam Turki bin Abdullah that once stood on its grounds. The project aims to maintain the mosque's significant historical value. Upon completion, it will cover an area of 625.78 square meters and accommodate up to 180 worshippers. This restoration is part of a broader initiative involving 30 mosques across all 13 regions of Saudi Arabia.

The mosque is built in the Najdi style using clay as the primary material. The construction method involves mixing clay with hay and placing it in wooden molds to form brick-like structures. This technique is economically efficient compared to other materials, offering benefits such as resistance to thermal transfer and maintaining moderate interior temperatures.
In this second phase, six mosques are being renovated in Riyadh, five in Makkah, four in Madinah, three in Aseer, two each in Eastern Region, Al-Jouf, and Jazan, and one each in Northern Borders, Tabuk, Al-Baha, Najran, Hail, and Qassim. This follows the successful completion of the first phase which restored 30 historic mosques across 10 regions.
The project has four strategic objectives: restoring historic mosques for worship; preserving their architectural authenticity; highlighting Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage; and enhancing their religious and cultural significance. It aligns with Vision 2030 by preserving architectural heritage while integrating it into modern mosque designs.
Saudi companies specializing in heritage restoration are responsible for carrying out these developments. The project balances traditional and modern construction standards to ensure sustainability while preserving heritage and historical characteristics.
This initiative not only focuses on architectural preservation but also aims to enhance the cultural significance of these historic sites. By doing so, it contributes to a broader understanding of Saudi Arabia's rich history and cultural legacy.
