The session, led by Bader Al Awadi, featured prominent Emirati calligraphers Narjes Noureddine, Maryam Al Balooshi, and Zaid Al Athamy. They began by exploring the significance of calligraphy in Arab and Islamic cultures, tracing its historical development as a reflection of Islamic aesthetics.

The panellists delved into how modern technologies are being integrated into calligraphy. They discussed the impact of these advancements on tools, techniques, and artworks while emphasising the importance of maintaining authenticity. The conversation included examples of modern calligraphy artworks and the use of calligraphy in architectural design, highlighting the Museum of the Future as a prime example.

Arabic Calligraphy's New Era

Training future generations was another focal point. The panellists stressed the need for training programmes and specialised workshops to nurture new talent. They also addressed challenges faced by contemporary calligraphers and opportunities to introduce this art form globally, fostering cultural exchange.

On the sidelines of the panel, an exhibit showcased various tools used in calligraphy. Attendees had the chance to view these artefacts up close, gaining insight into the rich heritage behind this art form. Additionally, visitors toured the Treasures of The Library exhibition, which featured rare tools used by ancient calligraphers worldwide.

Since its inception, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library has prioritised supporting calligraphers through workshops and exhibitions. These initiatives aim to highlight the unique beauty of calligraphy by displaying rare texts and both ancient and modern tools.

The panellists also highlighted participation in international art exhibitions by Arab calligraphers. This involvement plays a crucial role in raising awareness about Arab culture and showcasing its artistic heritage on a global stage.

The session concluded with discussions on how to bring Arabic calligraphy into the 21st century. The focus was on balancing tradition with innovation to ensure this art form continues to thrive in modern times.
