Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Attends Al Salam Cycling Championship’s Desert Race In Dubai
The Desert Race, part of the ninth Al Salam Cycling Championship, took place under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Organised by the Private Office of H.H. the Ruler of Dubai, this event is renowned for its diversity and prize value. Cyclists showcased exceptional skill and endurance as they tackled challenging desert terrain within Dubai's Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve.
Participants navigated two distinct routes: Sarouq Al-Hadid (52 km) and Al Ashoosh (57 km), with a timed sprint at Areeqib Brashi. Riders demonstrated tactical prowess and stamina while adhering to strict safety standards, wearing helmets, cycling glasses, and hydration packs. The race featured mountain bikes equipped with front and rear lights to ensure safety during the competition.

Omair bin Jumaa Al Falasi, Director General of the Private Office of H.H. the Ruler of Dubai, flagged off the race amidst many distinguished guests. He emphasised that the visionary leadership of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum continues to inspire the sporting community in various ways.
In the 57-km Al-Ashoush race, Shabab Al Ahli Cycling Club dominated, with Grega Bol taking first place, followed by Cornelis Vermeltfoort and Timo de Jong. The club also topped team rankings in this category, followed by Airwerks Racing Team and GDRFA Dubai.
For the 52-km Sarouq Al-Hadid race, Essaid Abelouache from Sheikh Ahmed bin Humaid Al Nuaimi’s team secured victory. Jaber Al Mansoori from Shabab Al Ahli Cycling Team came second, while Soulayman Minaoual from Yasi team finished third. In team rankings for this race, Shabab Al Ahli Cycling Club led again.
Sprint Challenge Highlights
During the Dubai Endurance City Point Sprint Challenge, Ahmed Obaid Saif Al Marri triumphed in the UAE Nationals (18-39 years) category. Jaber Al Mansoori claimed second place, with Abdulaziz Saeed finishing third. Cornelis Vermeltfoort won in the Residents (18-39 years) category.
In the UAE Nationals (40+ years) category, Abdullah Saeed Al Hattawi emerged victorious. Tariq Obaid secured second place while Naif Al Marzooqi took third. Ian Dialo Cabahug won in the Residents (40+ years) category.
Al Falasi highlighted that beyond being a sporting event, this race showcases Dubai's stunning landscapes across road, desert, and mountain terrains. It promotes the natural beauty of the Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve to audiences worldwide through televised or social media coverage.
The championship will conclude with a Women's Race on 16th February 2025 at the same location. This event not only celebrates athleticism but also highlights Dubai's unique geographic features and serene lakes within its conservation reserve.
