MOCCAE And Tadweer Group Collaborate On Pilot Project For Targeted Product Waste Management In UAE
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has partnered with Tadweer Group to launch a pilot project aimed at managing specific product waste in the UAE. This initiative is part of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programme, which is a key component of the UAE Integrated Waste Management Agenda 2023–2026. The signing ceremony took place in Dubai, attended by Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak and Eng. Ali Al Dhaheri, along with other senior officials.
The collaboration between MOCCAE and Tadweer Group is designed to enhance environmental sustainability and promote a circular economy. The pilot project will focus on managing waste from electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, and packaging. It will be temporarily implemented in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with Tadweer Group acting as the Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO).
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak emphasised the importance of partnerships in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She stated that strategic initiatives like this one are crucial for delivering sustainable environmental solutions, especially in waste management. "We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Tadweer Group to support our goals for integrated management and safe disposal of waste," she said.
The EPR initiative involves all stakeholders, including manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers, in the waste management process according to international best practices. Eng. Ali Al Dhaheri expressed pride in working closely with MOCCAE on this significant initiative. "Tadweer Group is proud to work closely with the Ministry on this important initiative," he noted.
The MoU outlines measures to enhance regulatory readiness by improving understanding of EPR monitoring requirements and documenting lessons learned during the pilot phase. It also supports private sector participation and investment in sustainable waste management by developing policy development roadmaps.
Public Awareness and Community Engagement
Both parties will jointly manage the project on a pilot basis in coordination with producers of targeted products and signatories of the EPR Pilot Project Pledge. Efforts will be made to raise public awareness and promote community engagement for active participation in the project.
At the event, 26 companies from various sectors signed the EPR Pledge, demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible waste management. This marks a significant milestone for the pilot EPR project.
The roles of producers and suppliers are defined under Cabinet Resolution No.39 of 2021 concerning integrated waste management regulations. The MoU aims to assess the effectiveness of EPR initiatives while promoting a circular economy through private sector involvement.
This partnership reflects UAE's dedication to addressing pressing environmental challenges while supporting sustainable economic growth through integrated waste management solutions that align with global standards.
